Walking home from work last night, I happened to have my camera on me, and rounded the corner to see Jing’an Temple looking glorious in all its might! B-e-a-utiful! I couldn’t help but stop to take a few shots, something I am tempted to do frankly every time I pass! Had a seriously surreal moment, whereby I thought to myself “Wow, this is where I live, this is what I pass everyday!” I love the contrast of East and West in this city, of old and new, of traditional and modern- spot the skyscrapers in the background of a few of the snaps 🙂
Trivia: Jing’an temple was originally built in a different location, along the Wu Song River circa 200AD, and was moved to its current location on Nanjing Xi Lu around the 13th century!
静安寺 directly translates as The temple of peace and tranquility. The temple is home to the largest Jade Buddha in China.
Entry fee is now 100RMB, but it is truly majestic inside- the panoramic banner of my website was taken, by me, inside the temple grounds last Summer. It’s amazing how peaceful it is inside the temple, given that it is located in the centre of Shanghai, on one of the busiest and most bustling streets in the city, at Jing’an metro stop. The temple definitely lives up to its name 🙂
